About FAWR: An Organization Advancing Progressive Thinking and Practice in Religion

Mission Statement

The Foundation for the Advancement of Women in Religion is a charitable organization that raises funds for women who are engaged in progressive scholarship and practice in areas related to religion.

Over the past two decades, there has been a right-ward shift in the public discourses on religion.  Although liberal and progressive peoples of faith have continued to produce scholarly works that challenge this conservatism, they have been overshadowed by less tolerant public discourses.  The foundation hopes to encourage women who are engaged in religious study and in projects that are born of their religious convictions to enter the debates and challenge the dominant trends in public religion.

While there are many organizations that support religious scholarship and research, there are very few that support women in religion.  Because women have been traditionally been barred from religious leadership and continue to be underrepresented in positions of prominence, the foundation seeks to increase the numbers of women in various religious communities.

The goals of the foundation are as follows:

● Encourage public progressive scholarship at the intersection of religion, gender and any other field by providing funding to women scholars.

● Increase the progressive scholarship in religion available to the public consumers by encouraging participation in conferences and other arenas of public dialogue.

● Encourage research on women’s religious communities and women’s leadership in religious communities.

● Engage the intolerance and conservatism of all traditions through public discourse about the role of religion.

● Raise funds for progressive projects informed by religious values that improve the lives of women and that provide alternatives to the public.

● Encourage women to publicly support progressive religion.

● Encourage peace-building.
